What is the Chinese Feng Shui Compass

The Chinese Feng Shui compass is a magnetically polarized tool, used to indicate the flow and harmony in the world and the spaces around us. Ever since its creation in ancient China, Feng Shui masters have taken its advice in the use of materials and discovering the hub of energy inside any building.

Unlike the Northward-bound compass from the western world, the Chinese compass points to the South. After an experiment with a metal spoon, the ancients derived the true planetary source from which the magnetic flow originates, the South pole, and designed their compass to lead toward it.

In Chinese, the compass is referred to as the Lo-Pan, meaning the 'bowl of everything' or 'bowl that opens the gate to all mysteries in the universe'. Drawing from the literal coordinates and surrounding landscaping of a building, the Lo-Pan is utilized in leading the way to achieving harmony with the local flow of energy, rather than moving against it. It also can be useful in placing certain objects of furnishings in particular places where the energy could use it the most, and to remedy a troublesome doorway, perhaps, if the building was constructed without the use of a compass.

Since metallic objects disrupt the readings the compass needle gives out, it is also believed that a concentration of metals blocks the entire flow of the planet in that spot, meaning negative forces might take advantage and open a portal. Masters and advisers will obviously suggest a removal or greater dispersion of these metals if at all possible.

This good energy of nature is known as the Qi, usually said Chi, and it permeates throughout every living thing and all places in the world. To encourage Chi to move correctly through an artificial construct such as a human home, certain precautions must be taken to ward off opportunistic negatives. Specific kinds of Chi can also be invited in by appropriately placing plants such as bamboo, or Chinese gold coins.

The compass makes the job of assessing a space much easier, in that it can be exacting and precise about what elements need to be paid attention to, and what areas are flowing nicely. The user discerns this by facing the area in question, then examining the direction of the needle. All polar directions on the compass's face are divided symbolically to represent certain elements, and Feng Shui wisdom directs where items belong. If these two directions correlate, then balance has been found.

For centuries, the Chinese Feng Shui compass has been a guide and director for the masters of Chi and architecture, and its wisdom permeates throughout most of China's cities and buildings. There are various forms and levels of complication for the Lo-Pan, and one can choose the compass that feels most suited to them, their personality, and level of experience. No matter which form it comes in, however, the compass will bring a greater sense of aesthetic harmony to any space.

My mom wants to start crocheting..any recommendations on what kind of needles to start with?

I would like to buy her a kit or something and maybe a book with small projects like scarfs and stuff to get her started. I know there are bamboo and metal needles and I'm not really sure on sizes. Any recommendations to get her started?? Any good beginner books I could check out? Anything would help, I'm clueless.

IF you know what colors she likes, just spend some time at your local craft store. Find the little "learn to crochet" booklets (Ask for help finding them if you need to). Pick out one with a item or two in it that you think she would enjoy making, most have 4-6 patterns with complete details from start to finish. Then go buy the recommended yarn (in colors she would like) and hook size to make that pattern, plus the book of course. The book should tell you how much yarn is needed to complete the pattern, and because they are aimed at beginners the patterns are easy to follow. I would also get her a few extra hooks, sizes G/6-4.25mm, H/8-5.00mm & I/9-5.50mm are very common sizes used to make many things from baby booties to afghans, sweaters, scarfs etc. Buying this way instead of a kit means you can pick the pattern and yarn colors and I believe it is cheaper than a kit.
