Sockety and socket sets are handy mechanic’s tools necessary for working with a variety of fasteners including nuts and bolts. Sets come a numerous sizes, from small, dozen-piece sets to extensive sets with ninety pieces or more. It all depends on what you need.
Socket sets consist of a collection of wrenches, interchangeable heads called sockets along with a variety of other add-ons. Extension bars, converters and a universal joint adaptor are among the accessories included in addition to the wrenches and sockets.
Wrenches or ratchets are basically steel shafts with a machined handle and a protruding square-shaped drive 90 degrees to the shaft at the working end. The ratcheting mechanism is controlled via a switch that is positioned opposite the drive. To change the direction in which force is applied, flip the switch. Depending on how the switch is set, the nut, bolt or other piece of hardware will tighten or loosen without you having to change the direction your hand moves. Male-end square drives come in small and large sizes. To function properly, the male end must match the female end on a given socket. Converters can be used to move up or down in size.
Sockets are cylindrical in shape with a female end on one side to attach to the ratchet. On the other side is their hollow. Either 6 or 12 internal points or flats comprise each hollow. Whereas 6-point sockets can only fit over hex-shaped nuts or bolts, 12-points sockets can fit both hex and square fasteners. Metric, American and imperial socket measurements are used. 3mm to 50mm metric sockets are common to basic socket sets. Deep sockets are used for spark plugs and other deep-set bolts.
A number of other tools are found in a good socket set. These include extension bars which increase the reach of socket, good for hard-to-reach nuts and bolts. Converters, as mentioned, are used to match small-drive ratchets with big-drive sockets and vice versa. A universal joint is an articulated accessory that allows you to bend the wrench if it’s convenient to do so.
