An electromagnetic flowmeter applies a magnetic field of 0.20 T to blood flowing through a coronary artery at a speed of 15 cm/s. What force is felt by a chlorine ion with a single negative charge?

The force is given by F = Bqv
B = mag. field strength = 0.20 T
q = charge affected = 1.60 E-19 C (single electron charge)
v = charge velocity = 0.15 m/s
F = Bqv
F = (0.20T)(1.60 E-19 C)(0.15m/s) = 4.80 E-21 N
The magnetic force is only experienced where the ion has a velocity component that is perpendicular to the field direction - this calculated value applies to an ion moving entirely perp. to the field. The force is perp. to the field and the motion. F = 0 if ion moves parallel to the field.
