can't remove faucet handle?
Ok so I'm trying to replace the shower divider valve. I unscrew the screw keeping the handle in place and try to pull the handle off to get to the valve. No matter how hard I pull it's not coming off. I didn't want to pull too hard and damage the pipes or something, but with firm pressure it's not coming off.
My question is: Is there different methods of removing the handle depending on what model faucet it is? (It's a standard three knob, hot shower cold. not one of those twisty pully numbers.)
yup, a little vinegar and it came right off. Thanks John! (BA when it lets me) There were a lot of build up and that was probably the cause of the problem to begin with :-
Depending on the shower diverter model will dictate how the handle
is removed. Units with delrin or nylon plastic bodies usually have a
packing nut of sorts. This is either a knurled ring or a large nut
which retains the valve body or the cartridge in place. Unscrew this
slowly and carefully, having turned off the water supplies to both hot
and cold valves. If the handle itself is difficult to remove, carefully
extract either the handle stem screw or the set screw. Place a
rag in the shower/tub drain just in the case a wayward part tries
to liberate itself from service. A little prodding and levering won't hurt
but don't go after it like your trying to pry a chunk of concrete from the
ground, a lot of these parts are made from plastic. Now if it proceeds
to be sticky and stubborn take some straight vinegar and wash the
entire face of the handle and valve stem body with the vinegar.
Any places you see excess lime buildup or a white crud that is flaky
and crusty, work these over extra hard. The vinegar is acidic in nature
and will react with the calcium deposits, dissolving their cement-like
bonds with surrounding parts. Apply liberally, rinse and try to remove
the stuck object,no luck, repeat again. 3 or 4 applications should do the trick.
After the valve body frees up wash it in the same vinegar wash to remove any
built up crud. The vinegar will not hurt the parts.
