Squares And Bevels For Carpenters - ToolsRUs
Whether you are framing a roof or making a toy box squares and bevels ensure that you create edges that are square and angles that are accurate. To prevent imprecise work, every professional or amateur builder needs to have a selection of squares as well as a versatile beveling tool in their shop.
The most basic type of square is called a try square. This tool features two basic parts: a wooden, rectangular handle and a metal blade positioned at 90 degrees to the handle and set into the wood down the center of the short side. Because the handle needs to be warp resistant, a common used is rosewood for its hardness and density. Likewise, the blade consists of hardened, tempered steel. The blade, set within the thickness of the handle, is often secured in place with durable, attractive brass rivets. The try square is used to check stock that has been planed, making sure it is square along the edges and true along the broad surfaces. Try squares usually range from three to twelve inches in length (blade).
Also needed in a shop is a dovetail square, a tool used to mark and make precise dovetail joints rather than 90-degree angles. An ancient technique, the dovetail joint is commonly used to join the corners of drawers, cabinets and for other tasks such as guitar building. The same durable construction materials used in the making of try squares are used for dovetail squares. They come in different angles or slopes including 1:6, 1:7 and 1:8. The right slope to use depends on the type of joinery.
Additional squares commonly found in shops include combo squares, a ruler-like piece of steel with a moveable square head. Combo squares are a quick way to check both 90-degree and 45-degree angles. Large framing squares are L-shaped and are used when working with big pieces of wood.
Multi-angle squares or beveling tools feature a rosewood or other hardwood handle and an adjustable brass or steel blade secured with a wing nut. A beveling tool belongs in every carpenter’s belt, for it is very versatile and can be used to mark nearly any angle on a surface. Nine- and twelve-inch blades are the common beveling tool sizes.
