Top Retro Bins To Rejuvenate Your Kitchen
Conventional kitchen bin designs are, let's face it, predictably boring. No one really wants their dirty, smelly bin to stand out in their kitchen. After all, it's where you put your rubbish, and in an ideal universe I think we'd all prefer not to know that our rubbish exists. And forget having to deal with the kitchen bin on a daily basis; that's something we'd all like to ignore too. Putting out the bin is not anyone's favourite chore. Cheaper bins are inevitably made of plastic in a dull colour (mine is gray) and more expensive bins are often stainless steel for ease of cleaning and to hide better in a modern kitchen.
Like most unpleasant aspects of life, though, your kitchen bin is necessary with all the waste that our modern lifestyles generate. So why not buck the trend? Why choose a boring bin that looks like everyone else's? You don't need to, and in fact, the perfect designs to liven up your kitchen are out there. Retro bins provide all the advantages of a modern bin with a touch of style that will immediately remind your guests – and in fact yourself – of the past, and in a very good way. Retro kitchen bins not only have fantastic, quirky designs, but are often available in a range of bright colours which are guaranteed to lighten your mood, even when you have to empty the bin. Here are just a few of the many great retro bins I've found:
For a sleek look that would fit in any modern kitchen, the Brabantia 30L Retro Pedal Bin is a fantastic choice. Colour options are slightly limited with this bin, but my choice would definitely be the red. Black also works well, but may not provide the same funky feel as having a bright red bin in your kitchen would. This bin has the patented Brabantia lid closure, ensuring that you will be admiring your bin purely on the basis of its appearance, rather than the odours emanating from the inside! The vented inner bin, which is also removable for cleaning convenience, will ensure that liner removal is easy every time, making this pedal bin both attractive and functional, especially with a ten year Brabantia guarantee.
The Hailo Kickvisier 50L Pedal Bin looks like it would be most comfortable in the kitchen of an astronaut, especially in gray. Green or orange, though, will give your kitchen that retro feel. This is ideal for larger families; it has a large opening which will fit entire plates or dustbins for emptying, and its fifty liter size will hold a lot of waste. It too has convenience features, like a rubber band to hold the bin liner sturdily and an odour-proof lid. For a science fiction feel in your kitchen, this Hailo bin would be perfect.
My final choice for the ideal retro bin is the classic Wesco Pushboy 50L Retro bin. This bin looks like it just stepped out of the 1950's, as it should since it was directly inspired by the traditional American ash can according to the company's website. This bin combines fantastic modern German metalwork with that bright red design to provide the ultimate in retro bins. There are other choices available, but why mess with perfection – even in a kitchen bin?
Next time you resent taking out your bin, consider switching to a retro style. The chore will be the same, but these bins will certainly make it easier.

The ventless gas log fireplace has found its home in contemporary design
If you own or have ever considered adding a fireplace to a home, you probably have considered a gas log solution. The natural wood option includes scouring the yard for twigs, buying wood, stacking wood correctly to burn well and throw heat appropriately, ransacking the recycling bin for kindling and learning the adjustment of the flue to keep the ashes flowing in the correct direction. The gas option includes pushing a button. Push a button and the flames are perfect every time. Control with a wall switch, a remote, thermostat or a simple push button in thefireplace but any way you do it -- gas logs are awesome!
The conflict for designers and builders has always been ventless or vented. Vented gas logs have always looked much more realistic but require all the same components of a wood burning fireplace -- cutting a hole in the wall or the roof is never fun. What do we do with the second floor? The average price of a good quality vented gas log set doesnt begin to pay for the process of making it real inside the home. Until recently, the fireplace safety features have hindered the design and realism of ventless gas logs. Until now.
If you have shopped gas log fireplaces, you already know the idea is great. Hand painted gas logs that look more like wood logs than real wood logs yet ignite on command are the stuff of dreams. If the home is built with a vented hearth and gas lines, vented gas logs are an easy sell: a beautiful accent with the convenience of a button. Vented gas logs require a chimney and flue and all the same construction as a wood burning fireplace -- plus a gas line.
While many homeowners select ventless fireplaces because of their safety and ease of use, ventless gas logs have become appealing in their own right. Installing a ventless gas log fireplace is simple --a log set purchased today can be enjoyed this evening in a home without a fireplace.
Ventless gas logs are also very safe. A ventless gas log fireplace is safer to is and easier to operate than the gas grill most clients use weekly. Safety features for ventless gas log fireplaces are effective while simple enough for the homeowner to operate. Ventless gas fireplace burners come with oxygen depletion sensors, flame sensors and thermocouples that detect heat from the pilot and stop the gas flow if the pilot is no longer burning strongly. BTU's are also limited to ensure all the gas is burnt and no residue lingers.
These safety features have contributed to the packaged and often unrealistic look of ventless gas logs. Logs must be stacked in a static position to limit contact with the gas flame. When gas flames contact solid objects, carbon is produced. Carbon is not good so the logs are designed to stack realistically while avoiding the flames. The lower BTU rating and static ceramic logs often combine to create a mere hint or a packaged look rather than a variable flame focal point in the home.
While todays hand painted ceramic and fiber gas logs look more and more realistic many more contemporary style designers prefer the real fire effect to the feigned wood burning heater. The fire affect is more attractive when it is not feigning realism -- it is already real without being fake, it is functional and it is simplicity in operation.
Many designers have to be shown that ventless gas logs have recently become available with crushed glass, fire shapes, fireplace rocks and balls. The effect of alternative fireplaces that are real fires without the traditional wood log aesthetic adds a contemporary look, even a post-modern smirk but has hitherto been outside the realm of ventless gas logs. Only recently have alternative gas log contemorary fireplace design options become available for ventless fireplaces.
Ventless gas log alternatives have leapt to the fore. Crushed glass fires, geometric shapes, brightly colored logs, fire balls and fire rocks in a variety of colors are now available for ventless fireplaces! Gas log burners with just a ribbon-like flame running along the firebox are becoming available more frequently with the addition of ethanol. The safety features and limited BTU technology that seemed to be impediments have become strengths as new progressive designs usurp the feigned realism of the traditional fireplace.
New ventless burners with all the safety features throw flames through the crushed glass or shapes to create the illusion of burning coupled with vibrant colors hitherto unknown in the world of fireplaces. Creatively combining fire glass with ceramic shapes or logs adds a variety of design as multitudinous as the individual homeowners. Vent free gas log controls are easy to use and convenient. Accessories have developed alongside providing stainless steel works of art and clean ceramic lines and flat surfaces for the contemporary home.
The next time you are designing the social space and you are brilliant enough to recognize the value of a fireplace, look at alternative ventless gas logs for their distinctive colors and bold statement. Without building a chimney, creating a thousand pages of local code regulations and most importantly without sacrificing quality for convenience the fireplace can be more than an encrustation of the larger design and is capable of stopping the eye to become the focal point of the home.
